Manager, Transit Tech Lab

Location: New York City – On-Site

The Partnership for New York City mobilizes private sector resources and expertise to advance New York City’s standing as a global center of economic opportunity, upward mobility, and innovation.

The Transit Tech Lab is a joint program of the Partnership and regional transit agencies (MTA, Port Authority, NYC Department of Transportation and NJ Transit) that identifies, tests, and deploys innovative technology solutions to a wide range of transit challenges. Through the Lab, which was established in 2018, the agencies are finding ways to modernize their systems and to transform the customer experience. Since inception, the Lab has been responsible for 51 proof of concepts, 35 pilots, and 11 commercial procurements. For more information about the lab visit: transitinnovation.org.

Summary of Position

Under the direction of the Partnership’s Senior Vice President of Innovation, the Manager of the Transit Tech Lab is responsible for planning, managing, and executing activities required to achieve program goals, including the organization of all meetings and events and interface with agency officials and private sector experts.

Responsibilities

Support the day-to-day activities of the Transit Tech Lab including:

  • Conduct outreach to the relevant tech communities to recruit candidates to apply for the programs, including meeting investors, entrepreneurs and other key stakeholders in the transit and mobility tech spaces. Participate in events to raise the visibility of the program within the transit and mobility tech communities.
  • Manage the initial review of the applicants, coordinate the review of relevant candidates with evaluators. Organize and manage the in-person presentations of companies selected by evaluators.
    • Conduct information sessions for program tech companies as well as orientation sessions with other program participants.
    • Schedule and attend early meetings between program tech companies and mentors and prepare the program tech companies for those meetings; Manage the schedule of project check-ins, presentations, office hours, workshops, and other content sessions with stakeholders; Convene periodic meetings and calls for the representatives of the participants to assess progress on an interim basis; Convene periodic meetings for program tech companies including with Executives in Residence.
    • Post Program, schedule and manage feedback sessions for the program tech companies and calls with stakeholders. Prepare a final report. Proactively develop ways to support graduates post program, including relevant introduction and visibility within the Partnership network.
    • Plan and execute events that support past graduates of the program.

Communications:

  • Work with the Senior Vice President of Innovation to manage communications to ensure smooth, timely and efficient operations of the program.

  • Work with Senior Vice President of Innovation and the Partnership Fund Director of Communications to identify opportunities for positive positioning of the program and deploy a public relations and traditional and social media strategy; maintain and update the program websites.

Diversity & Inclusion:

  • Increase outreach to ensure the Lab opportunity is presented to diverse founders.

Other:

  • Proactively remain informed and current on the competitive landscape and key trends in public transit, mobility, transit tech, and civic tech.

Qualifications

  • 2-3 years of relevant experience in program management, consulting, startups, government, technology, or another relevant field preferred.

  • Familiarity with the startup ecosystem and current trends in emerging technologies

  • Excellent project management, writing, communication, marketing, and organizational skills

  • Skillful at building managing relationships with senior stakeholders, including transit agency liaisons, entrepreneurs, and Partnership staff.

  • Business knowledge: Able to understand business issues and incorporate appropriately.

  • Able to work in a small staff environment. Willing to perform, and where needed assume responsibility for, administrative tasks.

  • Able to take initiative and work independently.

  • Ability to adjust work hours to include evening events.

Salary and Benefits

The Partnership offers an excellent benefits package including medical, dental, 401(k), commuter benefits and paid time off. The salary range is $85,000 – $100,000 depending on experience. This position is on-site.

Associate, Partnership Fund for New York City

Location: New York City – On-Site

The Partnership Fund for New York City is a social impact fund that is focused on: (i) Expanding opportunities for New York City residents by investing in projects that create jobs and support entrepreneurship in disadvantaged neighborhoods and (ii) Advancing technology in the public interest of New York City by identifying and supporting technology that addresses societal challenges, including resiliency across all five boroughs; financial and social mobility well-being and improved access to jobs and training for disadvantaged populations; health of small neighborhood businesses; and ensuring local government has access to the best digital tools as it delivers essential public-sector services.

The Partnership Fund makes direct investments in mission-aligned for-profit and not-for-profit entities. It also operates innovation labs with public-sector partners, including the Transit Tech Lab and the Environmental Tech Lab, as well as the FinTech Innovation Lab in partnership with Accenture. The Partnership Fund was started in 1996 by Henry Kravis under the auspices of the Partnership for New York City, Inc. a nonprofit business organization whose members employ more than 1 million New Yorkers. Private-sector investors provided the funding to catalyze an evergreen fund that continually invests returns. The Fund has invested over $190 million since inception.

Summary of Position

The Partnership Fund offers Associates unique exposure to public sector innovation, mission focused venture investments and public-private community development. Associates are integrally involved in every aspect of the Fund’s work, from investment review and portfolio monitoring to researching new sector initiatives of the Fund and expanding the Fund’s network. Through their work at the Fund, Associates are exposed to a wide range of mission aligned companies, projects and initiatives.

Responsibilities

Investment Review

  • Evaluate business plans and provide feedback to senior management
  • Assist senior management and a team of industry experts in conducting due diligence and analyzing investments. Build and sensitize detailed financial models
  • Prepare investment memoranda for approval from the Partnership Fund board
  • Draft and execute deal documents with senior management and pro bono legal assistance

Portfolio Management

  • Monitor financial and qualitative performance of portfolio companies and keep Partnership Fund senior management informed
  • Update financial models and reports of portfolio companies

Advance Fund Mission

  • Contribute to building the organization. Help build, maintain and maximize the Fund network
  • Conduct research in support of the Fund’s initiatives and innovation labs.
  • Perform organizational tasks to ensure success of the Fund

Qualifications

  • At least two years’ work experience involving in-depth financial modeling and corporate valuation (most commonly investment banking, but can be other roles with demonstrated financial experience)
  • Excellent financial modeling, analytical skills, and ability to understand business issues
  • Exemplary written communication skills and interpersonal and verbal skills
  • Strong commitment to social impact and entrepreneurship and to the Fund’s double bottom line mission
